I have not been to Seaworld in my adult life. The only time that I went to Seaworld, I was 3 or 4 and I don’t remember it. My sister does, however. She was the one selected to sit on Shamu. She has fond memories of Seaworld, but since I don’t remember anything about it, I don’t mind posting about their shenanigans.
Last night Jeremy and I watched Blackfish, the documentary about Seaworld. If you haven’t seen it yet, please go watch it. It is honestly so eye-opening and shocking. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing and seeing on the screen. This documentary focused on one of the whales, Tilikum, and the complexities of killer whales. They have more complex brains that humans do. Did you know that? It’s facinating…but heartbreaking at the same time.
I honestly now know that animals DO NOT belong in captivity.
If you think they do, I want you to watch that video and then tell me that they belong in captivity. They don’t. Especially killer whales who are actually gentle creatures. They travel in pods and each pod has a specific language. Mothers mourn when their young are taken from them. They have feelings like humans and show aggression when agitated. They need the free open water to escape from other killer whales who are dominant.
I repeat, they do not belong in captivity.
Seaworld blames trainer deaths on the trainers that lost their lives. Seaworld has never said that it was Tilikum who killed these people. But it was. And it’s because he is bored and needs to be freed. What probably started as fun and play, ended in a trainer dying. The trainers were brutally attacked by Tilikum and it really should have never happened. If Tilikum was allowed to swim in the open ocean, he would be free. He wouldn’t be bored and swimming around a concrete tank all day, alone and isolated.
I am disgusted that Seaworld won’t take blame for what happened to these trainers. I am disgusted that they don’t hire trained professionals who have at least a Masters in Marine Biology. You have to audition to be a trainer at Seaworld. AUDITION. Excuse me? I just always thought that they would hire people who are used to being around Orka whales. Or at least knows about Orkas and their habitats.
I am just disgusted. And to blame the whale when he was forced into captivity and taken away from his mother. How can you blame an animal for lashing out when he has been stripped of everything that his species holds dear? I just don’t understand how Seaworld can get away with it.
How would you feel if a baby was taken from his mother when he was 6 months old and send to live in a jail cell? That’s basically what Seaworld does. And they get away with it over and over again. I am just disgusted. And I will NEVER go to Seaworld again.
