I was at my mom’s house over the weekend and happened to go downstairs. Totally unexpectedly, I found my mom’s wedding dress.
It’s no surprise that I am getting married. I feel like I talk about it a lot on here; but hey. It’s kind of a big deal. I took her wedding dress home and I opened the box and undid the vacuum wrapping yesterday. I made sure to call her while I was doing everything, just so she knew what was happening. We weren’t sure the condition the dress would be in. We had a fire 20 years ago and a lot of our stuff was ruined from that. Luckily I think the dress survived that, but with flooding in the basement, we just weren’t sure if it would survive.
First of all, let me tell you. The people that vacuum your dresses know what they are doing. It took me a long time to get the dress out. Seriously. They had it looking like a mannequin in the box. I finally got the dress out and it isn’t really wearable. I say not wearable. I mean, I can’t wear it. My mom was teeny when she got married and I think her dress would fit 1/2 of me. The veil also managed to survive unscathed and that is what I wanted. Her veil was beautiful with lace all around the edges of it.
We are getting married outside so I don’t want the veil to hit the ground or it will get all dirty. So it needs to be shortened. Then, I want to find a piece of lace from the bottom of her dress and make that into a headpiece to wear for the reception. I just can’t wear the veil the whole time. It’s heavy! But this way I can still use some of her dress on my day. I also might use some of her lace around my bouquet.
What do you think of my plan?
Did you use parts of your moms dress or veil for your big day?
P.S. My mom knows my plans of cutting up her dress and she is happy with it. We can’t wear it, so might as well use it as much as we can. Just thought I would throw that in there.
