I am fed up with my face. Seriously. I have had acne issues since graduating high school. I was fortunate to not really have a problem when I was in high school, but I kinda wish I did. Then I could have gotten on Accutane and gotten rid of it all. But that was not the case for me. My sister and mom have issues as well with adult acne.
I have tried all sorts of things. When it started to get kinda bad, my mom recommended that I try Proactiv.
(Side Note: I wash my face twice a day, sometimes 3 times if I work out. I also wear make up that has Salicylic acid in it since I wear make up almost every day)
It worked for me, but I didn’t use any lotion after applying the 3rd step so my face was red and flaky. That made me hate it. I didn’t know that you are supposed to moisturize even if you have acne prone skin. I didn’t know that extra dry skin can cause acne to be worse. These are all things I learned later in life and had no idea about when I was 19.
After my bad experience (and bad because I didn’t understand acne) with Proactiv, I tried all sorts of things. I can’t remember when I stopped using Proactiv. I think I was 21 or 22 at the time I stopped using it. After that, I tried Aveeno Clear Complexion.
I liked how creamy the face wash was and the lotion was thick but not too greasy. This worked for a little bit, but my skin got used to the Salicylic acid and it stopped working. I started to get more breakouts than before. At this time I decided to go to the dermatologist.
The gave me oral medications that I didn’t think did anything and topical creams. They also ended up switching my daily skin care regimen to CeraVe.
This included the face wash and the moisturizer. These mixed with the prescription ointment that they gave me worked for a while as well. But still, I was getting more zits. And even worse than that was the scars that I have. They aren’t totally horrible, but they are still there and I hate it.
After I decided to stop using what the dermatologist gave me, I tried the new Olay Pro-X Clear for adult acne. It was a kit.
It’s a 3 step system similar to Proactiv but it came with a lotion, which Proactiv does not. I tried it out, and I didn’t like it. I used it 1 month and decided to throw in the towel after that. I just wasn’t working for me and is pretty expensive. The kit is about $40 and it only lasted me a month of using it 2 times a day. That was a little disappointing.
So, after my failed Olay experience, I came full circle and decided to give Proactiv a try again.
They have a new formula which is not as harsh and I made sure to get their moisturizer this time around. I got the 5 step kit which has the 3 original steps and then an oil control and moisturizer with SPF in it. So far this is working, I think. I still get zits but I am beginning to think this could be because of the weather and the pollen we had in early March. Things are beginning to clear up which is nice.
Now I just need to find something to all the scarring I have. Proactiv has a dark spot corrector that I could try since it’s not too expensive.
But I think I would rather invest more money and get the one from Clinique. I don’t know though.
Do you have problem skin?
