On the fifth day of January, I’m unveiling the new blog design. I sort of unveiled it a little bit last week, but I know that not everyone visits the blog to read my posts, so I wanted to formally introduce you, if you will.
Why a new design?
Well, I had been itching for a new design for a while, and seeing that I could buy a theme instead of getting a custom design just made so much sense to me. I was able to still customize it the way I wanted it and learned so much during the process. Some things are still a little bit wonky, but I like where it is right now and I know that I will continue to make improvements on it.
I love that I can customize the widgets and really make this design my own. I feel like I have more control over this than my last design and I couldn’t be happier with it.
Why a theme and not a custom design?
You know, I loved my custom theme but I just felt like it was time for something new and different. I needed a little bit more inspiration, and I get that with this theme. With that said, custom designs are expensive. Especially on WordPress. And they should be. The amount of coding involved is pretty intense, so I can understand why designers charge as much as they do.
I didn’t have the budget to spend $300+ on a custom design, so when I found restored316 themes, I knew I had found a place for me. I loved almost all of their themes, and I love how customizable they are. You can choose different background images (I didn’t do that), can input your own header, have a slider if you want, and so much more. The cost difference was the main reason why I decided on a theme and not a custom design.
How did you come up with your new logo?
I have some fantastic blogging friends. One of them is Ashley at The Grits Blog. She designed the new “Chits & Giggles”. I scoured her Pinterest boards for a new font, and fell completely in love with Abraham Lincoln. I loved how the & sign looked. The letter with the & sign just look so amazing. I love how put together it all is. It fits the theme so well!
How did you get 2 navigation bars on your blog?
The theme that I bought is set up for 2 navigation bars. All I did was tell it which pages/categories to put on each one, and it did the rest for me.
To kick off my new design, I am offering 40% off all ad spaces. Use code DESIGN from today until 1/12/15.
So, what do you all think of the new design?
