If there is one thing I love, it is reading. I could read for days and days. Not even kidding. So, today I want to let you in on a book I just finished. There are a few books that I need to review, but I couldn’t get this ending out of my mind.
A little backstory: I read this book in 5th grade. I loved it. It was the first book that allowed me to really picture what was happening in the book. I wasn’t a fast reader, but I remember really enjoying this book. I reread this book for the first time since I read it in 5th grade. I vaguely remembered what happened, but it had been so long that it was hard to remember the details.
The story follows Jonas as he become a Twelve and gets assigned to his become the next Receiver. You see, the community that Jonas lives in has removed pain and suffering when they started living in the “Sameness”. They also don’t have emotions and can’t see colors. Can you imagine life without color? Yea, me either.
What I liked about this story was how Jonas learns about all of the things that were taken away. He “receives” memories from the current Receiver and learns about pain, color, suffering and love. Because of all of the new things that Jonas is learning, him and The Giver (the current Receiver) hash out a plan to release the memories and give them to the community.
Basically they come up with a plan and something very shocking happens to make the plan go to shit. So, Jonas goes off on his own and runs away. What irked me and what I didn’t remember from 5th grade was the ending. I’m not giving it away, but I just couldn’t believe that this happened.
I also had no idea that The Giver is the first of 4 books in a series. I started Book 2 yesterday, but I am still confused about the ending of Book 1. How are these books going to relate to each other? We shall see! We shall see.
What have you read lately?
