Last month I posted about Blogging Don’ts. It was fairly popular and I want to share some things you need to do when you blog. Most of these will be for beginner bloggers, but a lot of these are great reminders for all us who have been blogging longer than a month.
This is not a “rules” post. I truly believe that every blogger needs to figure out what works best for them when it comes to how often to pump out posts. You gotta figure out the balance of blogging and real life.
Do turn off word verification
All new bloggers on Blogger probably don’t know this, but Blogger automatically sets your comments to include word verification. I have no idea why they do this and I wish they would stop it. But they do it anyways, and we have to go and figure out how to turn it off. Luckily there are bloggers out there, like this one, who has a tutorial to help you turn it off.
When you have this turned on (even if you don’t know you have it on), it takes a commentor so much longer to leave you a comment. I just hate having to enter those letters and numbers after leaving a comment. Half the time, I don’t even know what I am typing and I can barely see it. Just turn it off.
Do comment on other blogs regardless of size
It can be time consuming, and sometimes you don’t have the time for it, but it’s necessary to get your name out there. Take the time and comment on blogs. Not only does it get your name out there and noticed by other bloggers, but it also allows you to become friends with other bloggers. It’s the best things about blogging. So get commenting.
Almost all bloggers will respond to your comments. And many will carry on the conversation with more emails. I mean, how awesome is that? Instant connection and interaction.
Do invest in your blog
Blog designs are important. I hate to say that, but they are. A first impression is key when it comes to blogging. People don’t know you from a blank screen. People won’t really pay attention if you don’t have a designed blog. You can find premade templates if you aren’t ready to for a full blown custom design. It doesn’t take a ton of money to get a great design.
You also should sponsor other bloggers to really get your name out there. Commenting is really important and a huge part of blogging, but at the same time, advertising on other people’s blogs is also so important. You can make fast friends by sponsoring other bloggers. Look out for bloggers who are similar in size to you or that offer swaps. Swaps are great because they are free and still give you exposure.
Anything I should add to this list?
