I made the decision before Thanksgiving to migrate from Blogger to WordPress. This was a decision that took me a long time to make and was honestly not an easy one to make. Going from a free Blogger account (I did own my domain name) to a self-hosted blog is a huge financial decision.
After I finally decided I wanted to do it, I consulted Jeremy. We decided together that it was the right move for my blog. When I migrated, I also knew that I wanted a new design. It was time. I liked my old one, but it was fairly juvenile and I was just over it.
Could I have done this myself? Probably. But I knew nothing – and I do mean nothing – about migrating my blog or themes and CSS. Plus, since I wanted a new design, I wanted to just do everything at the same time. Was it expensive? Yes. But I think it was totally worth it and I really couldn’t be happier with the end result. But I am getting ahead of myself.
When you hire someone to migrate your blog, please do your research. You don’t want to be in a situation like Rachel was when she migrated. I went with someone who had hired someone to switch her to WordPress and didn’t have a good experience. This means she learned A LOT about coding and all the ins and outs of WordPress. She also has transferred quite a few other bloggers as well with no issues. It is definitely worth the investment to have someone who knows what they are doing. If I had attempted to do it myself, it would have been a huge epic fail. I highly recommend hiring someone. Yes, you can probably do it yourself and I am sure there are tutorials out there to do it, but it was less stress for me to hire someone to migrate me…plus I know they did it right.
I decided on Lisette of High Note Designs. Like I said before, I chose Lisette because she experienced the worst of the worst and I knew I was in good hands because of this. She learned so much since whoever transferred her messed her site up so much. If you are considering transferring to WordPress, please please please do your research when you hire someone. Don’t just look at who is the cheapest. Trust me, it’s worth the cost.
Lisette was amazing. Honestly, she was so great and she isn’t paying me to tell you that! My only advice is to not decide to transfer your blog before Thanksgiving and don’t buy your hosting until you are completely ready to transfer your blog. I bought my hosting a week or 2 before we actually transferred it, and my blog was down for 3 days. It really wasn’t a big deal to me since it was Iron Bowl weekend and I just didn’t care about my blog that weekend. But Lisette transferred me that Sunday and gave me a basic design so that my poor blog didn’t look naked.
None of the above things were her fault. If anything, she went above and beyond any blog designer I have worked with in the past. It took me like 2 days to finally come up with a blog title font. Really…it did! She wants you to be happy, and will do almost anything to make that happen. Lisette also designs Blogger blogs, so go check her out. It is worth her cost. I am surprised that she doesn’t charge more, actually.
I love my design so much and I know that I will be happy with it for a long time. Wordpress designs are expensive. And they deserve that cost. You basically have to code everything and put it into WordPress. So, yea…it’s worth the cost. I knew I wanted something that was more soothing than my other design and something I knew I could live with for a while. I don’t want to pay for a new design every 6 months. Jeremy just might divorce me if I did that –just kidding. He wouldn’t do that (and we aren’t married yet). She really got what I was wanting and just did a great job. I love my design — I already said that…oops.
So, how is WordPress? Well, it’s different from Blogger (obviously), but it’s not that scary. I love the customization that you can have, and I love all the fun SEO things as well. I didn’t know much about SEO before I moved to WordPress, and I am still learning so many things, but I am getting a pretty good grasp on it. There is still much for me to learn, but I have loved everything about WordPress so far.
I honestly believe that this was the best move for me and my blog. If you are on the fence about transferring, seriously think about hiring someone to do it for you. It’s so much less stress for you (the blogger) and worth every penny, in my opinion. Do some research about hosting and make sure it’s worth it for you. I don’t make much from my blog, but I really think it has been the best move for me. My pageviews are getting better and better and I know it will continue to get better.
Are you thinking of transferring to WordPress?
If any WordPress users know how to put folders in your Media Folder, that would be awesome. Thanks!
