Oh the first look debate. It’s something that you are either for or completely against. Jeremy was against having a first look when we were first engaged. He wanted the magical moment of seeing me for the first time as I walk down the aisle toward him. And I understood that. I just didn’t agree with him.
I wanted a first look for a few reasons, and we are going to list 5 of them for you.
Jeremy actually helped me with this post and some of these are the reasons that he wanted a first look (yes, he converted).
You see each other before everyone else sees you both.
You are going to have nerves on your wedding day. This is possibly one of the biggest life experiences that you can have, so nerves happen. While I was so excited, I was nervous. Knowing that I got to see Jeremy before our ceremony meant the world to me. We had a moment to ourselves (more on that below). It truly calmed me down.
You have time to yourselves.
The only people at our first look were Jeremy, myself, our photographers and our videographers. That was it. We wanted it like that so that it would be a private moment for us. Your wedding day is, in it’s most simple sense, the marriage between you and your fiance. We didn’t want the bridal party with us or anyone else who might taint this moment for us. We took pictures with the bridal party when we got back to the resort.
We also got an hour of uninterrupted time together that we were able to get fantastic pictures. If you have a first look, make sure that you include it in your wedding day timeline so that people know where you are and when they need to be at their next spot.
We are able to mingle with guests.
When we were planning, this was important to us. I told Jeremy that if we had a first look, we would be able to hang out with our guests during our cocktail hour. Well, the weather had other plans and completely changed our timeline. Either way, we had our hour to ourselves, and then we still got to mingle with guests (it just wasn’t at the cocktail hour – it was an hour before the ceremony).
We both loved that we got some great shots together (and I am so grateful we did this because of our hour delay). While we waited for the weather, wee were able to get the family shots done during our delay. We wouldn’t have been able to do that if we hadn’t had a first look, and we would have been more behind schedule.
You get out some of the emotion before the actual ceremony.
Going into our wedding day, I thought that I would be an emotional wreck. It didn’t turn out that way (I was just so excited the entire day), but it could have. Jeremy wanted to have a first look to help us both get our emotions out before the ceremony. We were able to cry and collect ourselves alone instead of in front of all of our guests.
For all of you who say that a first look takes away the emotion of the walk down the aisle, I completely disagree. I cried down the aisle and I cried during the vows. Jeremy also got chocked up when he was saying his vows to me. I was just as emotional as I would have been if we didn’t do a first look, because it’s an emotional day. You are going to get emotional either way. Just know that a first look doesn’t mean you won’t get emotional, because you will.
You can get pictures in a different location.
I know this might not be the case for every couple, but we chose a different spot to have our first look. Our first look spot was only a mile away from our venue. We wanted a different backdrop for our pictures, and we wanted some place that was private. No one but us knew where we were having our first look, so no one could bother us. We were completely alone, which I highly recommend.
Having a different location meant we had variety in our pictures. I really think that our photographers loved having a new location to take pictures of, and the scenery was just gorgeous.
